We are pleased to share that Prof. Nitin Agarwal, Founding Director of the COSMOS Research Center and Jerry L. Maulden-Entergy Chair and Donaghey Distinguished Professor of Information Science at UA Little Rock, was recently featured in the Executive Q&A section of Arkansas Business Magazine. In this interview, Prof. Agarwal reflects on his journey, research vision, and the broader societal impact of the COSMOS center’s pioneering work in social computing and cognitive security. The feature underscores his leadership in advancing innovative, theory and data-driven research, and strengthening Arkansas’s position in the field of information science.
In his conversation with Arkansas Business, Prof. Agarwal emphasized the mission of COSMOS extends beyond academia. It’s grounded in real-world impact, particularly in tracking and countering emerging socio-cognitive threats online. He explained that the center focuses on “detecting and disrupting coordinated influence operations, information campaigns and extremist content” across digital ecosystems.
Prof. Agarwal further articulates how COSMOS pairs advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities with social science methods to understand human behavior across platforms. He states that by analyzing large-scale data from social media, news, and network behavior, COSMOS is able to “trace narrative amplification, identify hidden coordination networks and predict when online behavior may escalate into offline risk.”
He also underscores the strategic importance of bridging research, policy, and practice. According to Prof. Agarwal, COSMOS’s findings “inform policy decisions, enhance business intelligence and foster workforce development in Arkansas and beyond.” The interview further highlights that by training students and engaging with industry and government partners, the center is helping to build the next generation of analysts and practitioners equipped to address digital-age threats.
Looking to the future, Prof. Agarwal expresses a bold vision: given sustained investment and collaboration, COSMOS has the potential to position Arkansas as a national leader in socio-cognitive security. He describes this as a mission that spans “generational funding” and multi-stakeholder commitment encompassing education, research innovation, government, business, and civil society.
