COSMOS is happy to announce the graduation of five Cosmographers in this Spring 2025! This semester, Cosmographers Tenzing Briggs, Selimhan Dagtas, Oyindamola Koleoso, Diwash Poudel, and Abiodun Quadri graduated with their master’s degrees. We interviewed the graduates about their journeys and what the future holds for them. This edition of the newsletter shares the story of one of our graduated students, Diwash Poudel, who graduated with a master’s in computer science and worked as a graduate research assistant at the COSMOS Research Center. Subsequent editions will share other student stories.

“I am extremely proud of the accomplishments and the numerous contributions Diwash has made to the COSMOS Research Center. We all celebrate his academic journey and wish him the best in the next chapter of his career as a data engineer at the COSMOS Research Center,” said Prof. Agarwal.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

My name is Diwash Poudel, and I am originally from Kathmandu, Nepal. I am currently graduating with my Master’s degree in Information Science.

What was your inspiration for joining COSMOS?

My inspiration for joining COSMOS stemmed from its reputation as a leading interdisciplinary research center that bridges cutting-edge machine learning with real-world social and behavioral challenges. I was particularly drawn to the opportunity to work on impactful projects funded by top U.S. agencies, where I could apply my technical skills in AI and data science to address meaningful societal issues. The collaborative environment and strong mentorship at COSMOS also aligned with my academic goals and research aspirations.

How has COSMOS helped in your journey?

COSMOS has played a pivotal role in my academic and professional journey by providing a platform to work on high-impact research at the intersection of AI, social science, and national security. Through hands-on projects, I’ve developed advanced skills in machine learning, data engineering, and data analysis. The mentorship from experienced faculty and collaboration with a diverse team have not only sharpened my technical abilities but also strengthened my communication and project management skills. Being part of COSMOS has given me the confidence and experience to tackle complex real-world challenges.

How has Prof. Agarwal’s mentorship helped you in your graduate studies?

Prof. Agarwal’s mentorship has been instrumental in shaping both my research direction and professional growth during my graduate studies. His guidance has pushed me to think critically, approach problems from a multidisciplinary perspective, and maintain a high standard of academic rigor. He consistently encourages innovation while ensuring our work remains grounded in real-world impact. Under his mentorship, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to funded research, co-author publications, and develop advanced skills in AI, all of which have been transformative for my academic and career trajectory.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to continue working in the field of AI and data science, ideally in a role that allows me to apply my research skills to solve real-world problems—whether in industry, a research center, or a public sector organization. I’m particularly interested in positions that involve machine learning model development, data-driven decision-making, and scalable system design.

What is your fondest memory as a Cosmographer?

When I recently joined COSMOS, one of my most memorable experiences was during a lab outing where I had the chance to talk with colleagues from different countries and cultural backgrounds. It was a great way to connect, learn about their unique perspectives, and feel welcomed into such a diverse and inclusive environment.

What advice would you give to your fellow Cosmographers?

To my fellow Cosmographers—thank you for creating such a vibrant, collaborative, and intellectually challenging environment. As I move on to the next chapter, I carry with me not just technical skills, but the friendships, late-night breakthroughs, and the spirit of curiosity that define COSMOS. Keep pushing boundaries, stay curious, and never underestimate the impact your work can have on the world. I’m proud to have been a part of this journey with you.
