Doctoral student Zach Stine was accepted to the 2019-2021 HASTAC Scholars Program.

Congratulations to Zachary Stine for being accepted to the 2019-2021 HASTAC Scholars Program. HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory) is a student-driven community of graduate and undergraduate students who are working at the intersection of technology and the arts, humanities and sciences.  Stine joined around 100 new scholars who have been accepted into the two-year cohort of the program.

As a HASTAC Scholar, he will have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with others who share his research interests in religious studies and Natural Language Processing (NLP) while contributing to the program by blogging about his research.  During the two-year fellowship program, Zach is hoping to conduct an interview with one or more researchers who are using digital humanities approaches in the context of religious studies.

“The primary reason I applied for the HASTAC Scholars fellowship is so that I could join a highly interdisciplinary network of other people interested in the intersection of the humanities and science,” Stine stated. “My hope is that I will learn about the interesting digital humanities research others are doing that I might not otherwise find out about, and that I will also get feedback on some of my own ideas.”

HASTAC hosts an online workshop series called Digital Fridays. Zach is planning on presenting his dissertation work during one of these workshops.  He will also participate in forums, webinars, and the discussion of new ideas evolving around teaching, learning, research, writing and structuring knowledge.  Zach is hoping to learn about effective teaching, as the program also focuses on innovative new modes of learning and research in higher education which will help him prepare to teach his first course Introduction to Natural Language Processing (IFSC 4399) in the Spring.

HASTAC accepts new scholars on an annual basis.  The next application period will open in September 2020 for undergraduate and graduate students as well as post-docs. Applicants are asked to complete a simple application process which requires them to state why they wish to apply and what they are able to contribute to the program.
